Mont Ventoux Sunrise Ride

The Violet Hour: Chasing the Dawn up the Giant of Provence

They say some climbs are for the legs, but Mont Ventoux at 05:00 is strictly for the soul.

I’ll keep it short today; frankly, the gallery below does a far better job of translating the experience than my vocabulary ever could. On the final day of our latest Women’s Discovery Tour, I floated a somewhat masochistic proposal: a pre-dawn assault on the Giant. I expected to be alone, but the pull of the mountain is a strange thing—a few fellow riders traded their sleep for the summit without a second thought.

The Great Quiet

At 05:30, the Provence hills were still draped in the velvet remnants of night. After a week of suffering through a 34°C furnace, the 17°C air felt like a blessing. We clipped in, the mechanical click echoing in the stillness, and watched the jagged silhouette of the summit sharpen against a fading starlit sky.

A Symphony in Rose and Blue

The ascent was nothing short of cinematic. There were no engines, no tourists, no clamor—just the rhythmic hum of tires on asphalt and the heavy, honest breathing of riders in sync. We watched the world ignite in real-time:

  • The Violet Phase: Where the horizon bleeds into deep purples.

  • The Rose Phase: That fleeting, fragile pink that warms the limestone.

  • The Clarity: A sudden, piercing blue that signaled the day had truly begun.

To stand at the summit with only three other souls – felt less like a workout and more like a privilege. It was a rare moment of “cycling heaven” where the mountain, for once, felt like it belonged entirely to us.

We’re heading back in a couple of weeks for the French Alps and Ventoux Tour. Here’s hoping the mountain is just as generous then.
