What should I expect from the Gran Fondo Mont Ventoux tour?

A chance to ride on some of the world’s best cycling roads, and participate in a fantastic Gran Fondo as the crowning achievement of your week. The rides leading up to the big day are a chance to familiarise yourself with the local roads, as well as ride up Mont Ventoux outside the pressure of the race. You’ll stay in a beautiful hillside hotel with incredible views and be able to sample some delicious provencal food.

Where will I be staying?

We will stay at a beautiful 3-star hotel just 5km away from Vaison-La-Romaine where the start of the Gran Fondo takes place. We’re also only 5km from Malaucene and the foot of Mont Ventoux. Surrounded by pine trees, the countryside around the hotel is as stunning as the Ventoux itself. The hotel has a swimming pool, a beautiful terrace with a view of Mont Ventoux and an excellent restaurant. Avignon TGV station is an hour away and is linked by train to both Lyon and Geneva airports. Get in touch with us if you need more advice on travel.

Is the Gran Fondo Mont Ventoux trip right for me?

If you’re looking to ride in the Mont Ventoux Gran Fondo, as well as have some great warm up rides then these few days will be ideal. By the time the tour starts you should be able to ride at least 120km, and be comfortable climbing for at least an hour. The Mont Ventoux from Bedoin is a tough climb, and can often take an amateur cyclist over 2 hours to complete. If you’re looking for a friendly and supportive few days of cycling in a world famous location, this week is for you.

Overview

The route of the Gran Fondo Ventoux follows beautiful roads, in a dream setting. You will pass through small typical Provençal villages, fields of lavender in bloom, the fabulous “Gorges de La Nesque” and typical vineyards of Ventoux.

And of course one of the most beautiful arrivals in the world with the summit of Mont Ventoux. There are a choice of 3 routes and if you’re feeling really strong you can ride one of the gravel routes the day before the main Gran Fondo.

Our tour to the Colnago Gran Fondo in Provence gives you the perfect opportunity to get to know the roads ahead of time thanks to our carefully selected warm up rides. These also give you the chance to enjoy the region on more relaxing rides before the excitement and challenge of the big day.

Each day our guided ride will leave the hotel after breakfast and depending on the route that day we’ll either be back in time for lunch at the hotel, or a boulangerie stop will be built into the ride.

Once back at the accommodation your time is your own to enjoy the swimming pool, book a massage, or simply relax and get ready for the next day.

Dinner will be taken at the hotel, or there are restaurants in nearby Malaucene and Vaison-la-Romaine if you prefer to head out for dinner

Wednesday 2nd June :

Arrival and bike check

After your lunchtime arrival at the hotel we’ll put the bikes together (if needed) and head out on a short orientation ride to check bikes (and legs) are working well. In the evening we’ll sit down together for dinner and run through the next few days of riding.

Thursday 3rd June :

Ventoux Circuit

Our first real day riding will take you on a full circuit of Mont Ventoux, but without climbing up it. The roads around the mountain are simply incredible, and we’ll ride to Malaucene and along the beautiful and quiet road taking you through the Gorges du Toulourenc.

Ventoux is in sight as you then ride east towards the town of Sault where you’ll descend through the famous Gorges de la Nesque (you’ll ride the other direction on the day of the event).

Finally we’ll head north back to Bedoin and over the Col de la Madeleine to Malaucene the short distance back to the hotel.

Friday 4th June :

Ventoux from Bedoin

Leaving the hotel after a hearty breakfast you’ll ride down through Malaucene and over the Col de la Madeleine to Bedoin. From the town you’re straight onto the lower slopes of Mont Ventoux. The climb has a gentle start through the vineyards, before really kicking off at the first hairpin. The road gets steep all the way through the forest before easing as you reach Chalet Reynard.

Now the summit comes into view, but there’s still a fair way to go to reach your goal. The views open up over the plains below, as the landscape next to you gets more and more barren.

Once at the top you’ll drop down to Malaucene for a coffee before riding back up to the hotel for lunch.

Saturday 5th June :

Today is a day to relax, get a massage, fuel and mentally prepare for the Gran Fondo. We’ll take a short spin down to Vaison-la-Romaine to collect our race packs and check out the event village.

Sunday 6th June :

Colnago Mont Ventoux Gran Fondo

After an early breakfast we’ll roll the 5km down to the start line in Vaison-la-Romaine for soon after 6:30am. The starting gun is fired at 7:30am and you’re off one of the best cycling events around.

Once you reach the summit of the mountain and the finish line it is a nice descent back down to Malaucene and a short 5km back to your hotel. We’ll celebrate together in the afternoon and you can recover beside the hotel swimming pool.
